Sound insight

The /s/ sound is produced with the tongue near the ridge behind the top teeth while air flows in a narrow stream. A lisp (/th/ for /s/, or lateral airflow) that persists past age 5 is worth evaluating with a speech-language pathologist.

S sound sentences: FAQ

Begin with the short S sound sentences on this page, then build up to the harder S tongue twisters once the sound is accurate. Say each one slowly first, then speed up — tongue twisters give lots of repetitions of s in a fun, low-pressure way.

S loaded sentences are sentences packed with several s words in different positions (start, middle and end) so a child gets many practice reps at once. Every sentence here is S-loaded, which is why they work well for articulation warm-ups and carryover.

Choose one sentence, model it slowly, then have your child use one s target word during a game or story. Short, frequent practice spread across the day beats one long session, and it helps the S sound carry over into everyday talk.
